The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Wednesday vowed to promote economic development in Cambodia by attracting investors, especially to the agriculture sector.
The vow made following an official meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Kazuhiro Yoneda, JICA’s director, who ended his three-year term.
The new director, Yasujiro Suzuki, promised to the Premier to help and promote development, especially focusing on the agriculture sector in Cambodia, Ieng Sophallet, an assistant to the premier, told reporters after the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
“Irrigation systems will be a priority sector to be strongly promoted in order to help poverty reduction in line with the Cambodian Government Core Policy,” Yasujiro Suzuki told the premier, according to Ieng Sophallet. Moreover, Kazuhiro Yoneda told the PM that he would try to attract more investors to the agriculture and industry sectors in Cambodia.
The premier kindly welcomed Japanese investors and businessmen to Cambodia. The Japanese Government, in accordance to JICA, on August 13 signed an agreement worth US$82 million with Cambodia to expand sea port infrastructure, as well as other economic development and poverty reduction projects.
US$72 million is a concession loan to develop Sihanoukville Port to expand its capacity and another US$10 million is grant aid for economic and social development.
Japan so far continues to be the top donor to Cambodia.
