U.S. provides additional flood relief aid of nearly 1.5 mln USD to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The United States through the U. S. Agency for International Development's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), is providing nearly 1.5 million U.S. dollars to Cambodia to address critical needs in drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, agriculture, and livelihoods support during the flooding, according to a press release from the U.S. embassy in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.
This amount is in addition to the initial 50,000 U.S. dollars provided in October for distribution of emergency relief supplies, it said.
The relief aid will go to three of the most-affected provinces - - Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, and Kandal.
It said "Save the Children," a non-governmental organization, will receive an additional grant for 750,000 U.S. dollars, and 31, 500 Cambodians will be the direct beneficiaries of this grant in Kampong Cham province.
The World Vision will receive a grant for 721,807 U.S. dollars and will reach 27,000 affected Cambodians in Kandal and Kampong Thom provinces.
Overall, these organizations will reach approximately 58,500 of the most vulnerable and flood-affected people over the next six months, it said.
The Mekong River and flash floods have inundated 18 cities and provinces in Cambodia since early August. At least 247 people were killed and about 1.5 million people were affected, according to the reports of the National Committee for Disaster Management.
It said the floods have caused damage, mainly to rice paddies and roads, which is worth 521 million U.S. dollars.

 The USA Embassy in Phnom Penh announced yesterday that the USA government and the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) will sign amendment to a bilateral agreement on 2nd November that will provide $ 20.30 M in 2011 funding from USAID to support Cambodia’s priorities in economic growth, food security and global climate change. Under this amendment, the RGC will offer non-financial support equivalent to $ 425,000. U.S. Chargé d'Affaires, a.i., Jeff Daigle, will attend the ceremony and sign as a witness. (Rasmei Kam.)

AKP Phnom Penh, November 2, 2011 –The United States Government and the Royal Government of Cambodia signed here on Wednesday an amendment to their bilateral agreement that will provide US$20.3 million in 2011 funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to Cambodia.


Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in charge of the Office of the Council ofMinisters H.E. Sok An and USAID Mission Director Mr. Flynn Fuller signed the amendment on behalf of their respective governments under the witness of U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Mr. Jeff Daigle.


The assistance will support Cambodian priorities in economic growth, food security, and global climate change, said to a U.S. Embassy’s press release yesterday.


Under the amendment, the Royal Government of Cambodia will provide US$425,000 in-kindsupport, it said.

According to the press release, this bilateral agreement provides funds to support USAID’s Helping Address Rural Vulnerabilities and Ecosystem Stability (HARVEST) Program that willsupport the Royal Government of Cambodia’s national development strategy by enhancing agricultural production, developing post-harvest management capacity, increasing access to food, and preparing the country to adapt to climate change.


HARVEST will also strengthen the ability of civil society, the private sector, and the government to address food security and climate change challenges in Cambodia. HARVEST will contribute to achieving the goals of the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future and the Global Climate Change Initiatives.


The project’s implementing partner is Fintrac, Inc. The funds will be also used to supportUSAID’s ongoing economic growth program for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises 2/ Business Enabling Environment (MSME2/BEE), which will continue support for alleviating poverty in rural areas by increasing the productivity of family businesses. To date, MSME2/BEE has helped over 6,000 farmers and small business owners increase sales by 100%-340%, allowing them to access better health care, educate their children, and expand their businesses. The project’s implementing partner is Development Alternatives, Inc.


In addition to economic growth, food security and global climate change, the United States supports a broad range of programs designed to benefit all Cambodians, including programs in health, education, human rights, rule of law, good governance, and combating trafficking in persons. USAID expected to provide a total of 64.87 million in assistance to Cambodia in 2011.

US to give $35 mn to Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Oct 25 (IANS) The US will provide about $35 million to Cambodia to help improve the country's health and the education sector, the US embassy here said Tuesday.
Agreements on this were signed by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong and mission director of the US Agency for International Development (USAIDFlynn FullerXinhua reported.
The money will support a variety of ongoing activities to reduce the transmission and impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent and control infectious diseases, improve maternal, reproductive, and children's health, and strengthen public health systems.
The funds will also support ongoing education programmes aimed at improving the quality and relevance of basic education and increasing access to schooling for children, the US embassy said in a statement.

The U.S provides $50,000 to Cambodian flood victims

The U.S government, through its aid agency- the UnitedStates Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided $50,000 to Save The Children to help relief efforts in flood-ravaged Cambodia.


In a statement dated 11th October, the U.S Embassy said the money will be used to provide temporary shelters, clean water, sanitation and hygienic products such as soap etc to 2215 families in Kampong Cham province who live in the worst affected areas.


China has provided $7.87 million to Cambodia and Singapore has provided about $100,000 to both Cambodia and Thailand which are the worst-hit countries in the regi

The governmental aid agencies of the US and UK have begun a new health program that seeks to reduce the spread of HIV through 100 percent condom use.


 


The project will provide $27 million to Population Services International over five years to help fight the spread of the disease.


 


Mam Bunheng, secretary of state for the Ministry of Health, said the funds will help the government in its fight against HIV and AIDS.


 


A national survey released last week showed an increase in condom use in Cambodia: 99 percent for direct sex workers and 83 percent for indirect sex workers.
