Japanese government today donated 16 million US dollars including a sophisticated heavy and light demining machines notably brush cutters and mine detectors to Cambodian Mine Action Center to clean landmines and uxos.
the handover ceremony of de-mining equipment phase 5 this time was presided over by Dr Sok An, deputy prime minister and minister in charge of council of ministers and H.E Joe Nakano, vice minister of foreign affairs of Japan at Siem Reap province.
Heng Ratana, director general of CMAC: “we thank Japan as well as their people for momentum of supports and continued provision of resources, be it in the forms of technical expertise, fund and equipment.”
According to its CMAC report, in 2004-2005, the number of victims was high as 8000 people per year. By 2008-2009, this number dropped significantly to just over 200 victims per year. In 2010, there were e 286 local people killed and injured by landmines and uxos but in 2011, it dropped to 211. (By Long Heng)
