Phnom Penh: The
Government of the Republic of Korea through the Korea International
Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will provide 5.5 million USD grant aid to
Cambodia through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) to
enhance the waterway in Cambodia under the “Project for Feasibility
Study on Waterway Improvement for Port Logistics Development in
Cambodia”.
The Project is aimed at conducting
bathymetric survey, soil test to draw up basic and detail design and
environmental impact review including measures for bank erosion
prevention for possible dredging along the Mekong River from Phnom Penh
to Kratie Province. With capacity building for relevant staffs at the
Department of Waterway at MPWT and other relevant authorities such as
the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, the Project will contribute to informed
policy formulation of the Cambodian government in the field of improving
inland waterways and logistics, port function and environment.
The Record of the Discussion for the
project was signed by Ms. BAEK Sook Hee, Representative of the KOICA
Cambodia Office, and H.E. Sokhom Pheakavanmony, Secretary of State of
MPWT on 7 March, 2014. “KOICA has already built a reliable partnership
with MPWT working for rebuilding infrastructure in Cambodia such as
roads and railways, and we also have a project in civil aviation.” Ms.
Baek said. “This Project is opening a new development cooperation phase
as it is the first time for us to get involved in waterways.”
Thanking KOICA and the people of the
Republic of Korea for continuous assistance in developing Cambodia,
Secretary of State Pheakavanmony said. He mentioned that “throughout
this efforts and commitment, the close relationship between Cambodia and
Korea will be further strengthened”.
