KOREAN DOCTORS TREATING DIABETES AT PREAH KOSSAMAK HOSPITAL

[THE PRESS RELEASE WAS PUBLISHED IN RASMEI KAMPUCHEA DAILY NEWSPAPER, DATED 24 March 2011, Vol. 19, NO. 5463]

Twelve Korean doctors who specialized in diabetes treatment, coming from Korean Diabetes Association in collaboration with Preah Kossamak Hospital, has planned a three-day medical mission to provide medical treatment to diabetics in Cambodia from 25 March 2011 to 27 March 2011.

Based on the KOICA news release, twelve doctors, three nurses, and twenty three supporters including KOICA volunteers will participate in the mission aimed at treating 1000 diabetics. Along with the mission, the association has planned to donate medical supplies to the hospital for enhancing effectiveness of the mission and helping Cambodian residents to get wider access to medical care or basic medical supplies for diabetes.

The mission above has been made to commemorate one-year anniversary for the cooperation between the Association and the Preah Kossamak Hospital after both parties has signed the MOU on diabetes treatment in 2010. Notably, the mortality rate of diabetes appears in a larger number, compared to the mortality rate of Malaria and HIV/AIDs. Having realized the serious cases of diabetes in Cambodia, the Korean Diabetes Association has devoted many efforts to help Cambodia bring the mortality rate of diabetes down to a minimal one. For the long term cooperation, the Association plan to construct a National Diabetes Treatment Center.

The KOICA news release states that the Korea-Cambodia cooperative project on the diabetes treatment shall play an important role to reduce the diabetes rates in Cambodia. Through the provision of the effective medical treatment and donation of medical supplies, a major project outcome is to achieve effective glucose control and disease management in order to decrease diabetes complications while maintaining normal physical and psychological growth and development for Cambodian citizens.
