Phnom Penh: Official Development Assistance (ODA) of the Republic of Korea provided 8 programs to develop Cambodia.
Mr. Son Sung-il, Deputy Representative of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to Cambodia said at the 1st KOICA ODA Workshop on Friday, December 11, 2009 that Cambodia was an important partner among other partner countries in the world through ODA in terms of grant aids which provided 8 programs in 2009.
He added that the grant aids were focus on Capacity Building, strategies policies for poverty-reduction in order to achieve the CMDGs in 2015. He went on to say that, through ODA in terms of grant aids, we built Friendship Hospital Establishment in K.Chnang, construct Siem Reap Bypass Road Pavement, construct Irrigation System and built Model Village Development in K. Cham.
For improving the ODA in Cambodia, Mr. Son Sung-il said that “Policy dialogue for enhancing aid effectiveness was improved for developing Cambodia”. Only in 2008, the volume of Korea’s grant aid was US$ 13 million. The budget for grant aid in 2009 was not officially informed yet.
Lee Kyung-soo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cambodia, said that Cambodia is one of Korea’s key partner countries in term of Official Development Assistance (ODA) Programs. Since early 1990s, Korea's grant aids to Cambodia started at a small scale, mainly in the form of humanitarian aid. However, it has increased exponentially in terms of volume, and more importantly, in terms of substance since diplomatic relations between the two countries were re-established in 1997.
Lee Kyung-soo continued to say that Cambodia was ranked the 5th major recipient countries among other partner countries who received the grant aid. In 2008 alone, the volume of grant aid was ranked number one with more than 13 million Dollars. It amounts to over 33 million Dollars in total if the EDCF loans are included.
