Nearly 40,000 USD to Upgrading Surgical Ward at Kampot Referral Hospital
Kampot Province: A nearly 40,000 USD project by voluntary Korean doctor and Kampot Referral Hospital has been successfully completed this October 2009.
According to news release of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the project was implemented by Mr. Song Sang Hyun, a Korean doctor specialized in surgery, from August 2008 to October 2009 at Kampot Referral Hospital with the shared budget of 29,000 USD from KOICA and around 10,000 USD from Kampot Referral Hospital in kind and in cash to upgrade the old surgical ward, repair anesthetic apparatus and electrocautery, equip operation table, improve emergency room environment and necessary emergency room equipments, train Khmer medical staff, and provide free hernia surgeries to children.
Mr. Chhuy Chhong, director of Kampot Referral Hospital, said that this project helped the hospital improve old medical facilities and equipments for regularly surgery for both adult ands children who are from Kampot and most part of Preah Sihanouk provinces. Moreover, the Korean doctor has also provided training and share experiences with one Khmer surgeon and 2 medical assistants. He added that from March to September 2009, the Korean doctor and his hospital have also provided free hernia surgeries for a total of 124 children whose ages are from 1 to 14 year-old.
Dr. Lim Kang Eang, director of Kampot Provincial Health Department said that the department continues to cooperate with KOICA in this volunteer program, and the hospital had already requested KOICA for successors of the current doctor and nurse.
Mr. Kim Byung-gwan, representative of KOICA office in Cambodia said that KOICA is considering sending the successors to the hospital especially KOVs in the field of nurse to health centers which is as part of development cooperation agreement between the government of the Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of Cambodia.
